Understanding Cultures
Being Culturally Aware
When an international student arrives at your home your family has now become multicultural. Regardless of the country your student originates, being culturally aware is essential to the process of fully embracing the experience of being a host family. Our culture is more than just the food we eat or the holidays we celebrate; it is our identity; it is what defines us and makes us the unique individuals that we are.
Many noteworthy articles have been written on becoming culturally aware and understanding how two cultures can come together cohesively and successfully. We reference such an article, from Walden University; that discusses the aspects of culture and how to be culturally aware and sensitive to individuals from different countries. While this article is written from the standpoint of embracing cultural diversity in the classroom, we felt the content was apropos and applicable both in the home and in the classroom setting. We invite you to read the article and learn more about how you can become culturally aware to provide a loving and inviting home supportive of your international student.
