Last Minute Preparation Tips

We are Here to Help!

Whether this is your first time hosting or you're a host pro, last minute preparations before your international student can seem overwhelming and rushed. No need to fear, Twinn Palms has compiled a list of reminders to help your last minute preparations go smoothly just in time for the arrival of your new student.

  1. Is the room ready? Do you have the bedding washed and the pillows fluffed?
  2. What’s the current situation on the bathroom? Have you prestocked with travel (or full sized) toiletries? Is there a place for his/her personal items too? How about some lovely gender neutral baskets under the sink or a plant to brighten up the bathroom?
  3. How’s the study space looking? When was the last time the pencils were sharpened and the light bulbs replaced?
  4. Have you considered a home tour? It’s important your student knows where to get extra toilet paper and clean towels; not to mention the wi-fi password. These little things can help him/her settle in quickly.
  5. Have you stocked your refrigerator with healthy snacks and maybe practice a recipe or two from your new student’s hometown?
  6. What about the neighborhood tour? Have you spoken with your family to decide where and when to take your student to your favorite local haunts?
  7. What time does school start? What time does it get out? And more importantly, who is responsible for taking your student to and from school?
  8. Have you made a list of the names and phone numbers of everyone who lives in the house to share with your student? What about a house key? Have you got a copy ready for your student?
  9. Take a moment to make a little welcome/care package for your student. Nothing says, “Welcome Home” better than a nice little package of yummy treats and fun essentials.
  10. Remember: first impressions are everything...is the bedroom stark and uninviting or are there some lovely personal touches to help your student feel more at home instead of in a hotel room?
  11. **Bonus: Don’t forget to breathe, have fun, and know that no matter how rushed you may feel; you and your student are going to have a wonderful year together building memories, laughing, and sharing experiences. That’s the most important part anyway.
