Host Family Spotlight - September 2017
Getting to Know The Helmers
Name of Family: The Helmers
City/State: Angwin, California
Every month we showcase one of our amazing host families. This month, we are proud to introduce you to The Helmers, who are not only devoted to their student but also to the rather large population of wild animals living in their backyard.
Here is a little more about our September Host Family of the Month, The Helmers. Congratulations on a job well done!
How has hosting a student changed your life?
We believe that the most enjoyable experience that has ultimately changed our lives is having the joy of experiencing different cultures. We have noticed that, although our cultures may differ, we are all the same at our core.
What was your funniest host parent moment?
We live in a very remote area, surrounded by forest. We told our student that we see all sorts of wild animals daily on our driveway and around our property. Foxes, deer, skunks, coyotes, and jackrabbits are among some of the most common wild animals that we see. Our student was very excited to watch for these animals on the drive to and from school. Sadly though, after three weeks of not seeing any animals, we were all giving up hope until she suddenly yelled, “squirrel!” She was delighted to see the squirrel, despite it not being one of the most exciting “wild” animals; but she was thrilled nonetheless. Since that time she has been able to spot the other wild animals on various occasions.
What is the best advice for other host parents?
The best advice that we can give is to just communicate with your child. If there is a situation that needs to be addressed, we believe it is important to do it sooner rather than later.
Thank you to our 2017-2018 host families!
