Every other month we showcase one of our amazing host families. This month, we are proud to introduce you to The Tillmans’s from Hyattsville, MD; who have been hosting students for the last 9 months!

How has hosting a student changed your life?

I (Janel) was a former exchange student and have always been excited to meet new people from other countries. I love learning about different customs and food. It was wonderful to be able to share a bit of this with my three children by hosting a student from China.

What was your funniest host parent moment?

Nothing particularly sticks out in my mind. It’s been a learning experience for both my family and the host student.

What is the best advice for other host parents?

My advice would be to open up your mind to learning as much as you can about your student’s culture as well as sharing your own customs. It’s helpful to think, “How would I want my son or daughter to be treated in another country?” Also, keep in close contact with your coordinator so you can get timely advice on anything that may arise.
