Help you Student Feel at Home

Your new international student may be excited, anxious, and homesick all in one. What do you do? Helping them to understand your city is a great way to ease their anxiety. Incorporating a bit of their culture - even better.

Your student is here to learn about the United States and the culture of its people. Taking them on small trips to the unique areas in your city is a great way to begin developing a strong bond between you and your student relationship.

Places to Visit

Something as simple as visiting your neighborhood park gives your new student a glimpse into daily life.  Government buildings such as city hall, the courthouse, and the local fire station will help your student understand how local government agencies run while giving them an opportunity to learn more about the United States government.  Museums and libraries are a quiet place to continue the city tour. Allowing your student ample time to wander around museums and libraries gives them the opportunity to take in the American culture. The local mall is fun for anyone. This also gives your student time to pick up any extra items they may need while staying in your home. Depending on where your student is from, taking them to places reminding them of home may ease their homesickness. For example, restaurants serving their favorite food, stores, and celebrations honoring their cultural holidays will make them feel more welcome in your home.

Getting Around

Don’t forget to show them how to get around the city. If they’ll be taking public transportation, show them how to purchase a pass, hail a cab, or buy a ticket to ride the train. They’ll most likely need to exchange their money prior to the school semester or school year. Take them to the local bank and explain banking procedures. Don’t forget to show them the landmarks around your home so they don’t get lost.
