Coordinator of the Month - August 2017

Getting to Know Crystal Flora

Name: Crystal Flora

City/State: North Hills, California

This month we are proud to honor Crystal Flora from North Hills, California as our Coordinator of the Month. Crystal has been with Twinn Palms for five years. She was nominated this month for her exemplary ability to go above and beyond for her students.

Here is a little more about our August Coordinator of the month, Crystal Flora. Congratulations on a job well done!

What have you learned as a Homestay Coordinator with Twinn Palms?

One of the most exciting things that I have learned as a coordinator is the importance of being aware and sensitive to cultural differences. Even though you think you may understand other people's culture, it can sometimes be completely different when you have the opportunity to visit their country. Last year I had that great opportunity to visit China twice. What a great experience to learn about the Chinese culture and have a better understanding of the home that students leave behind. As a coordinator, I enjoy the opportunity to visit host families and help them understand the impact culture shock may have on our students.

What are some of your favorite moments with your students?

One of the most amazing opportunities in working with our students is being able to help them understand how the American way of life is different from their upbringing. On the flip side, one of the biggest challenges is helping them feel comfortable opening up and fully engaging with their host families. When they finally make that transition, it is very rewarding to watch them grow.

What do you recommend as the number one “must have” for a host family?

In my opinion, one of the most important recommendations is learning the art of patience and understanding. Additionally a rice cooker is a MUST to have on hand!
